Welcome to the website of Mental Health WA Pty Ltd, a company founded by Australian engineer and author Greg Ralls.
The company was started after Greg wrote the memoir Unravel: To Unwell and Back - the first in a planned series of three separate but distinctly related works. The aim is to sell books and promote his speaking and mental health advocacy.
Unravel was written on an Android smartphone, while Greg walked for exercise in the mornings, before starting each day in his role as a family man and full-time mining consultant.
A personal motto in life of Greg's is, 'A little madness goes a long way'...
Psychosis & schizophrenia
Greg experienced first-episode psychosis in 2000 and was straightjacketed, made an involuntary patient on a locked ward of Graylands Psychiatric Hospital and prescribed antipsychotic medication.
The triggers for his illness were work-related fatigue and psychological trauma, experienced early in his professional career.
During the course of his treatment he received a diagnosis of schizophrenia - a contested definition for human experiences which can have alternative explanations outside the common 'medical model' framework.
Greg put his period of distress and recovery into context for the benefit of others, documenting in Unravel everyday life experiences before, during and after being unwell, including the experience of hearing thoughts (internal, inaudible - akin to telepathy - sometimes referred to as hearing 'voices').
Based on knowledge gained through his journey, Greg strongly believes it is the way we see ourselves and others that can lead to recovery.
His own unique mindset and circumstances are tangible proof that recovery is possible and does happen.
Mental health advocacy
Aiming for a balanced view of mental health systems and treatment practices for people living through mental distress and extreme states of mind, Greg currently engages in public and corporate speaking, advocating 5 Keys to Recovery and Mental Wellbeing: simple, down-to-earth, practical suggestions which derive from his own experiences, observations, reflection and learning.
